Some examples of monitors we've designed and built:
Real-Time Water Quality Monitor for Everglades

Problem: Client wanted temperature and salinity data transmitted in real-time to his office from points in the Everglades; location was frequented by vandals.

Solution: RDI built a monitor in a stainless enclosure and client mounted the solar panel out of reach.

Technologies:
  • Hach water quality sensor
  • GPRS cellular data modem

Water Quality Monitor for Mine Pit

Problem: Client needed to neutralize contaminated water in an abandoned open pit mine before it escaped into a famous nearby recreational river.

Solution: RDI built 2 custom buoys to measure water quality in the pit and feed that data in realtime to a SCADA system which then injected the appropriate amount of neutralizer into the pit.

Technologies:
  • Hydrolab water quality sensor
  • Spread spectrum radio
  • Current loop interface to SCADA

Turbidity Monitor for Drinking Water Reservoir

Problem: Client needed to add huge water intakes at the shore of a fresh water reservoir but had to keep the cloudy water resulting from the excavation confined to a certain area.

Solution: RDI built 3 monitoring buoys that alarmed if turbidity exceeded certain levels at their locations. The alarms consisted of telephone messages automatically delivered to the excavator and his supervisers.

Technologies:
  • Hydrolab water quality sensor
  • Spread spectrum radio
  • ModBus
  • Alarm autodialer (telephone)

Weather and Water Quality for Beach

Problem: Client wanted to test a mathematical model for predicting e. coli outbreaks at a popular public beach.

Solution: RDI's solution reports water quality and weather data in realtime.

Technologies:
  • Hydrolab water quality sensor
  • Spread spectrum radio
  • Weather sensors
  • GSM cellular modem
